Longstanding experience in teaching of foreign students has favored to formation and development of teaching in English at National Aviation University (NAU). Since the former Soviet times NAU (Kyiv Institute of Civil Aviation engineers that time) has become one of most powerful aviation higher educational institutions in the world. In 80s of the last century around 2000 students from 83 countries studied at NAU. In the former USSR in terms of correspondence between native and foreign students our University yielded just to two universities - Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and Lomonosov Moscow State University. Close cooperation with international institutions in aviation branch have developed for the long history, namely with International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO), Euro control, European Center on Air Traffic Control, and advanced aviation universities in different countries in the world.

The cooperation with ICAO has been especially developed for the last years thanks to efforts of the Rector of the University, professor M.Kulyk (Vice-Rector that time), professor V.Babak (who was the Rector that time), professors G.Suslova and V.Kas’yanov. Because of their efforts the ICAO Institute was founded at NAU. This Institute deals with educational as well as with scientific engineering activities in the sphere of personnel training and re-training for civil aviation needs. Taking into account the University achievements in the sphere of aviation science and education, the ICAO administration together with NAU have created two European Regional Educational Centers: European Regional Aviation Security Training Center and European Regional Government Safety Inspectors Training. Active and fruitful cooperation of National Aviation University with ICAO caused the barest necessity in teaching aviation disciplines in English and in promotion the system of education in English.

The English project at NAU was founded in 1999. A great contribution to its development had been made by the Rector, professor M.Kulyk and professors G.Suslova, O.Akhmaldinova, Yu.Veruzskii, V.Kas’yanov, A.Tunik and others.

More and more students are getting involved into the process of education in English. Because of this tendency, which has continued for the last several years, the number of English-speaking students is being increased. So, in 2009-2010 academic year 1407 students studied in English (54 of them are foreigners). And this is a natural process as fluent English significantly increases ever-growing demand for a specialist at a domestic as well as at an international labor-market. Our graduates completed their education in English on bachelors and master programs have felt the results. After all, a proficient language together with a professional training is the key stone to success everywhere – in Ukraine and Russia, in China and France, in the USA and Great Britain

Students having their courses in English actively participate in conferences and contests.

A great attention is paid to seminars and round-table discussions together with representatives from foreign institutions.
